Westin Resort, St.John
Membrane Bioreactor Wastewater Treatment Plant
In October 1999, TSG was commissioned by Westin
to replace an obsolete wastewater treatment facility. TSG designed,
permitted and constructed the first membrane based wastewater
treatment facility in the Caribbean. The new 100,000-gallon per day,
state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant was placed into service
in May 2000.
The system consists of a suspended growth biological
reactor integrated with a microfiltration membrane system utilizing the
ZenoGemŽ Process and Zenon membranes. This microfiltration system replaces
the solids separation function of secondary clarifiers and sand filters
in a conventional activated sludge system and ensures that no particulate
matter is discharged in the effluent. The ZenoGemŽ Process is a proprietary technology.
As with the desalination plant, this project required
the removal of the outdated equipment, renovations to the buildings, and
installation of the new equipment while maintaining the resort's wastewater
treatment capability at all times. The membrane modules were submerged in
an active aeration basin to prevent plant shutdown.
TSG owns, operates and maintains this wastewater
plant, and its related seawater reverse osmosis plant under
a long-term agreement.
"TSG has been a fantastic
partner of ours with providing us a waste water treatment
plant that has never failed us since its installation. Having
the peace of mind knowing that your wastewater plant is
being monitored 24 hours a day, with no breakdowns in over
three years, has been a critical part of our success. We
are very fortunate to have a great team from TSG with competent
and professional staff that are always there for us. They
have gone above and beyond on many occasions to assist us
in non related repairs and support throughout our operation.
When you are running 92% year to date occupancy with a full
house of demanding guests, it is nice to know you have TSG
as a great partner ensuring nothing is going to fail on
your wastewater treatment. I look forward to their team
effort and expertise for many years to come."
